PARTICIPATION FORM

Advanced casting allows extended time for training and rehearsal for complicated elements of Sycamore productions.
Auditioning and casting all three shows at the same time diminishes stressful and competitive audition time and improves community among AVES Theatre participants.
Students have casting information at the beginning of the year allowing them to plan their year with full knowledge of the required dates of a production they are cast in.
Students can plan for seasons where they may want to explore sports or other Sycamore activities.

Students will be given options of several short audition selections at the info meeting.
Students select one piece and arrive during the time slot where others performing that piece are auditioning.
Students perform one at a time for the directors
Actors overall performance is evaluated using the scale below.
After auditions, scores are tallied. Directors form a call back list based upon the audition scores and the roles being cast.
Students at callbacks have the opportunity to perform selections from the show as selected by the directors (not all students will be asked to perform all selections).
Students are taught/briefly rehearse selections and then perform for the students/directors at callbacks.
Students are excused from the call back in groups.
After the auditions are concluded the directors discuss which actors they think are the “best fit” for the roles.
Work ethic, commitment, service to the program and providing opportunities to a maximum number of students may also be considered.

Our audition selections are designed to remove perceived barriers and encourage many students to audition. To this end, little preparation is required for the audition.
Students gathering the courage to audition should come to the information meeting, learn the audition selections and pick the one that they feel they can perform with the most ease.
Before auditions, the students should rehearse standing up and in an open space, work on performing the piece with the entire body presenting poise and confidence.
For musical selections: look for a Karaoke track of the song online or make a recording of the accompaniment as played at the workshop. This will help ensure that the piece is rehearsed in the correct key at an appropriate tempo.
Advanced students should consider familiarizing themselves with the entire play or musical. Study the characters and plot. Learn the music or major scenes of all character’s they can conceivably play. Develop a physical and cognitive interpretation of each of these characters that can be applied readily at a callback audition.

5 Student’s interpretation of the piece demonstrates advanced preparation and execution that for a moment transcends the audition room and takes the audience into the world of the play; realizing the directors’ vision of the playwright's intent.
4 Student demonstrates a compelling or interesting interpretation of the piece.
3 Student performs the piece as written with confidence and poise.
2 Student communicates the text, commits fully to character and performs the piece with proper projection, articulation, pitch and rhythm.
1 Student has difficulty performing the audition piece. The performer struggles to stay in character, sing in tune or on rhythm or communicate the text.
